Orphans Overseas' Karibu Project begins with the youngest of learners from the surrounding slum communities, starting before birth, seeking to eliminate the achievement gap before they begin school. Nearly 200 preschool children are currently enrolled in our full-day sensory enriching learning centre. Twenty babies reside in our abandoned baby residence and are loved and nurtured until they can be resettled back into their birth families or placed with a local family for adoption.
Karibu Centre's resident program for pregnant women provides safe housing and food during pregnancy and beyond. Women learn values, child-development, parenting, computer and vocational skills in the program so that they will be prepared to provide a stable loving home for their babies. Karibu Centre provides vocational education for parents of our preschoolers so that these moms can feed their children using their own skills, with dignity, without dependence on handouts, preventing their children from the serious risks prone to orphans.

Community Learning Centre

The day program provides two nutritious meals and early childhood education for children age 0-5 from the nearby slum communities. The curriculum for the Learning Centre has been developed specifically for these children with an aim of enlarging each child's world through exploration and multi-sensory stimulation while using all of the senses: sight, sounds, touch, taste, and smell. All children grow physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally from participating in the program.

Pregnancy Support Services

This residential program provides support to teenage girls who do not have family support during their pregnancies. Many of these girls have been thrown out of school or sent away from their families as a result of their pregnancy. Some of the key components of the project include:

  • Prenatal and Maternity Care
  • Vocational Skills Training
  • Parenting Skills Training
  • Life Skills Training
  • Counseling
  • Mentoring
  • Transition Assistance

Abandoned Infant Care Centre

The care centre provides temporary care to babies who have been abandoned and are medically fragile. Some of the key components of the project include:

  • Rescue care for starving, neglected, and medically fragile babies - including HIV positive infants
  • Care centered on encouraging optimum development through multi-sensory stimulation
  • Social work assessments of the community support options for rehabilitation with birth parents, referral services for specialized group homes, and adoptive placement within the local community.
  • Individualized development assessments of each child
